Recently there have been quite a few stories circulating the web concerning in-game advertising in StarCraft 2. This commotion was apparently inspired by a comment made by Robert Kotick, the CEO of Activision Blizzard, which implied that Starcraft 2 would include some form of in-game advertising. "On the Blizzard side, [we need to] really be figuring out things like the StarCraft business model for the future, with in-game advertising and sponsorship, [which have] really not been something that has moved the dial for anybody in the videogame industry, but that we think presents tremendous opportunity for the future" [Kotick: ActiBlizz Ponders the Future]. Thankfully, this has been publically denounced by Blizzard, who has stated that they believe Kotick was actually referring to Battle.net. I believe that having advertising in-game would greatly detract from the experience. I play computer games to escape reality and the trappings of a commercial society. Although, living in an advertising drenched culture, I am hardly surprised that this has been put forth as a possibility. I am reminded of an episode of Futurama when Fry is surprised about experiencing an advertisement in his sleep. If this were possible; I’m sure I’d be dreaming about Coca-Cola or (if you believe everything you read) some other advertising-hungry company such as Blizzard for example ;) |

I would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome all of our new AUS-1 users, in particular the players and staff who are migrating to AUS-1 from Bored Aussie after the announcement that the Bored Aussie PvPGN server will be permanently shutting down. Some may have seen AUS-1 and Bored Aussie as being in competition since AUS-1 re-opened our doors last year, however I have always thought of the two sites as being very valuable parts over the overall RTS community in Australia which complemented each other equally. As far as I’m concerned, when Bored Aussie officially closes its doors in April, it will be a sad day and a great loss for the Australian StarCraft and WarCraft 3/DOTA communities. On a positive note, with the close of Bored Aussie begins a new chapter for AUS-1. We are opening our doors to all of the old Bored Aussie WarCraft 3 and DOTA players, as well as inviting a number of Bored Aussie staff to continue the great work they have been doing in the community, by joining the AUS-1 team. With the increase in players on AUS-1 we will also be bringing in additional (new) staff to manage events such as competitions and tournaments. We will also be upgrading the AUS-1 website and PvPGN server hardware to ensure there are no issues as load increases. Now for some facts and history about AUS-1. There have been a lot of questions floating around on the forums, so I will attempt to answer the main ones here. AUS-1 Facts and History: - AUS-1 was founded in 1998 and was home to over 30,000 active Australian StarCraft players during the StarCraft & Brood War boom between 1998 and 2003.
- AUS-1 went into hiatus between 2004 and 2006, and was re-opened in early 2007.
- AUS-1 is owned, operated and backed by an Australian company. Therefore AUS-1 is not restricted by the growth or financial constraints that other privately hosted or individually sponsored games servers often suffer from.
- AUS-1 is not hosted in a house or an office :) The AUS-1 server is hosted/located within the TransACT Communications telehousing facility in Canberra, Australia.
- AUS-1 and our dedicated team are experienced in running large scale gaming sites and servers. A userbase the size of Bored Aussie is nothing new to us, and we are prepared and eager to face and overcome the challenges ahead.
- AUS-1 is FREE and open to all users and players from all countries. No invitation is required to join the server.
AUS-1 does not ask for any donations for using our services, rather we simply ask that you support our sponsors who continue to make this free service possible. Considering the long and excruciating wait for the sequel to Blizzard’s popular game StarCraft, it is obvious that great things are expected by many. However, according to Chris Metzen (Blizzard’s Vice President of creative development) in a recent Blizzard Podcast , StarCraft 2 is the "best work we've ever done". Not only will StarCraft 2 have a stronger cinematic feel, but a great emphasis has also been placed on the storyline. This labour of love has been dubbed by Metzen as "[T]he best work of our careers Watch out WOW, StarCraft 2 is set to take over! |

Ok, now I’ve seen it all. Check out the following video to witness what it is like to pay StarCraft on a six inch PC. Even if there are some disadvantages to playing on such a limited screen, you cannot deny the benefits of being able to fit it in your pocket and taking StarCraft with you...where ever you might be *note to self, bring StarCraft to next family gathering... Anyway here it is. |

Click here if you want to witness footage of the spectacular Star Invitational Tournament! GOM TV has opted to provide English play-by-play!!This is a refreshing idea, and it saves me from attempting to translate Korean and miserably failing. There are several awesome replays to be watched; and with many pivotal moments and tactical moves being analysed in English, you can sit back and get a taste of the full Korean battle experience. |
